Because of my wife’s on-going health problems following a major operation last year, I have not sought re-selection in South West Norfolk for the next general election. This is the only reason why I have not asked to be considered. My duties as an MP have made it difficult for me to spend as much time as I would wish with her.
My parliamentary claims have nothing at all to do with my decision. I did not come into politics for personal gain, and I have already pledged that when I sell the Norfolk property against which I have claimed, I will repay to the taxpayer any profit that I make after deduction of taxes, professional fees and costs for which I have paid personally. I stand by that pledge.
It is a privilege for me to serve my constituents. I shall continue to do my best for them and until the next election it is business as usual.
