FRASER CHAMPIONS WRVS VOLUNTEERS

Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, is a key sponsor of a Commons Motion commending emergency response volunteers who work for the charity WRVS (Women’s Royal Voluntary Service).  It is hoped that the Motion will draw attention to the worthwhile work the organisation carries out, so that its volunteers gain the support and recognition they truly deserve.

Christopher Fraser said: “I am delighted to be supporting WRVS volunteers. Their work ranges from delivering meals-on-wheels to elderly or housebound individuals, to providing emergency response teams to assist in emergency situations. During the summer floods, WRVS volunteers were a constant source of help, delivering refreshments to rescue workers and those who had been evacuated from their homes.  Volunteers also set up and staffed rest centres for those whose homes had become inhabitable.

“The organisation’s volunteers should be recognised and commended for their time and efforts. Without them, many individuals would not be able to maintain the dignity and independence that they deserve. The organisation is a true asset to our society, and I hope, by sponsoring this Commons Motion, more of my constituents will be encouraged to volunteer locally for this excellent charity.”

WRVS was set up in order to help those most in need within the community and it has continued to carry out its essential work for 70 years.

WRVS Emergency Response Volunteers

That this House commends the unsung efforts of over 5,000 WRVS volunteers on call night and day to respond to emergencies and disasters in communities throughout Britain; thanks them for the support that they have provided to over 11,000 people caught up in emergencies so far this year from major disasters like the summer floods to local emergencies such as helping the elderly in power cuts or evacuees from fires; notes that this amazing achievement is a testament to tremendous community spirit and supports WRVS’ call for more people in local communities to volunteer with them in their area, so that local communities are better prepared for emergencies, big or small, whenever they strike.
