Speaking after Tony Blair’s resignation as Prime Minister, Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has urged Gordon Brown to call an early election. Christopher Fraser said:
“Despite the glowing tributes to Tony Blair as Prime Minister, I have no doubt that ten years of Labour Government have let South West Norfolk down. We still lack investment in our inadequate transport infrastructure, our NHS is facing a funding crisis, Norfolk Constabulary has had to put an additional levy on our Council Tax just to ensure minimum levels of police presence on our streets. Labour Ministers do not understand rural issues and have disastrously failed our agriculture industry.
“As Gordon Brown takes over, he has declared his passion for education and his commitment to the NHS and pledged new policies to deal with the shortcomings of the Blair regime. Where has he been for the last ten years? As a member of Blair’s Cabinet and the person holding the Government’s purse-strings, he must accept responsibility for much of what has gone on. He says he trusts the people and will listen to them. Why does he not go to the country now, and seek a proper mandate to legitimise his authority?” |
