FRASER SEEKS GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT
TO FLOOD ALLEVIATION SCHEME FOR FENS

Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has called on the Secretary of State for the Environment to give a commitment that a proper flood alleviation programme will be put in place to relieve flooding in the Fens.

Speaking in the Chamber during a Government Statement on flooding, Christopher Fraser told David Miliband MP that parts of South West Norfolk are regularly flooded by water flowing from effective alleviation measures upstream in Milton Keynes and Bedford, with roads closed for more than 100 days last winter.

Christopher Fraser said: “I asked the Minister if the people of South West Norfolk and the Fens deserve equal treatment with people elsewhere in the country. In his reply, he said he was “very happy” to confirm that my constituents have as much right as others to expect that their needs are addressed.

“I welcome his acknowledgement that the knock-on effect that we suffer on Welney washes is very important, and I shall remind the Government of this response as I work with the Environment Agency to secure an effective and sustainable solution to the problems we face locally.”
