FRASER CONCERNED BY GOVERNMENT THREAT TO CAP NORFOLK POLICE AUTHORITY BUDGET

“This Government is failing the people of Norfolk”

Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has spoken of his concern that the Norfolk Police Authority budget may be capped by the Government.

Christopher Fraser said, “It would be a grave disappointment if Norfolk Constabulary’s ability to deliver were to be capped. Given the background, this decision would be extraordinary. I have long been calling for proper Government funding for Norfolk Constabulary. Only last month I asked the Minister why grants such as the Crime Fighting Fund and the Rural Policing Fund, vital in maintaining the force’s capabilities, have failed to keep pace with inflation over several years.

“Ultimately, we need more police on our streets. The Government promised to provide funding for 280 community support officers, but failed to deliver on that pledge. Norfolk Police Authority has been forced reluctantly to increase its Council Tax precept in order to make up for Government funding shortfalls, so that people feel safe in their own homes. Instead of threatening to cap the budget, Ministers should be reviewing their support for the Police Authority so that they can continue to maintain an efficient and effective police force in the county. This Government is failing the people of Norfolk.

“I shall do all I can to ensure that Norfolk Constabulary is not penalised.”
