Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has called on the Government to recognise that any moves to restructure local government in Norfolk will divert time and money away from improving front-line council services.
Speaking at Question Time in the Chamber, he also asked the Minister to accept that it will be the hard-pressed Council Tax payer who has to pick up the bill.
Christopher Fraser said: “Ministers must recognise that we have local councils in Norfolk that perform very well despite a lack of government funding. My constituents are already suffering from punishing council tax hikes, and could see their bills rise even more in order to pay for this politically-motivated restructuring.
“No one locally seems to be in favour of unitary status or other forms of government re-organisation, yet the Minister seems hell-bent on abolishing one of England’s historic shire counties. It is essential that the Minister starts to listen to the people who would be affected.”
