Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has renewed his calls to the Government to ensure that the A11 east of Thetford is dualled at the earliest opportunity in order to unlock the economic potential of the town and the whole of Norfolk.
Speaking in a House of Commons debate on trunk roads in Norfolk, Christopher Fraser also told the Junior Transport Minister, Tom Harris MP, that the recent fatal crash on the A47 in his constituency had graphically illustrated the wider problem that the roads infrastructure in Norfolk is unsafe and unfit for 21st century traffic.
Christopher Fraser said, “I reminded the Minister that Norfolk is the only county in England which does not have a dual carriageway link to the national trunk road system. The bottleneck of the A11 leaving Thetford is now a national disgrace, and its upgrade should be treated as a matter of national importance.
“Tom Harris confirmed that the work is “in sight”, subject to completion of the statutory procedures. I called on him to ensure that this statutory work does not hinder the ability of the Highways Agency to turn aspiration into fact. I have complete confidence that when the road link is completed, the cost will be repaid many times over when the true economic potential of Thetford and Norfolk is realised.”
