FRASER SECURES PUBLIC MEETING WITH POST OFFICE

Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, has been fighting the Government’s proposals to make substantial cuts to the post office network for more than two years - speaking in Parliamentary Debates, meeting Ministers and tabling questions. He has worked in sub post office branches, been in touch with local postmasters and listened to local views on the withdrawal of post offices services.

When the list of proposed closures was published, he called a meeting with Post Office management to register the strength of feeling locally that it will have a devastating effect on our rural community.

Christopher Fraser said, “I am fighting for all the sub-postmasters who want their branch to remain open. I have insisted that the Post Office come to a public meeting so that they can explain the issues they face in managing the Government’s agenda, meet sub postmasters whose offices are due to close and hear the views of local residents. Senior managers have acceded to my request.

“The meeting will take place on Monday 7 April at the Town Hall in Downham Market. I shall be chairing the meeting, and shall ask the Post Office to explain how proposed closures have been identified, what criteria have been taken into account and how local people can make their objections known during the consultation period. Sub-postmasters affected will have a chance to make their own case, after which the meeting will be thrown open to the community in a question and answer session.

“It is important that local residents understand the process and how they can best support the sub post office in their own village. We have to use the consultation to best effect to make sure the implications of the proposed closures are understood by Post Office management.”
