FRASER CHAMPIONS BILL TO HELP CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEED

Christopher Fraser, MP for South West Norfolk, is a key sponsor of a Commons Private Member’s Bill which, if enacted, would increase the detailed recording of statistics relevant to specific Special Educational Needs (SEN) in schools.  The Bill would amend the 1996 Education Act to enforce the collation and publishing of SEN statistics.

Christopher Fraser, Secretary of the All-Party Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties Group, has said that he hopes the Bill succeeds in changing the lives of both parents and children who are affected by Special Educational Needs, such as Dyslexia or Autism.

He added: “I am delighted to be sponsoring this Bill.  Currently, the collation of information and statistics on Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and other Special Educational Needs in schools is insufficient to help us identify the scale of the problem.  This Bill should go some way to making the identification process more systematic.

“Once we have a better understanding of the extent of the issue, we can develop a well-informed strategy on how to improve resources and reform teaching methods so that SEN in schools is tackled head-on.  I want to ensure that schools are equipped to help every child, including those who suffer from specific learning difficulties, to reach their full potential in the classroom.”
